Movie filmed here today; You’re invited!

August 15, 2007

Today’s the day.

Today’s that long-awaited day that you can come out here to the stadium for your chance to be in a yet-untitled movie. Everyone is encouraged to be a fan in the stands for filming of live-action scenes.

Put on your Bees gear and join us at noon. There will be plenty of door prizes, including a 42-inch flat-screen TV, a laptop computer, and cash prizes up to $100.

“Voice of the Bees” Randy Wehofer already has a role in the movie, playing radio broadcaster Jack Jeffries. Bees pitching coach Bobby St. Pierre and Bees players Kurt Mertins, Michael Thompson, Brady Everett, and Matt Morizio will also appear in the film. This is your chance to be in the movie, too.

Winning streak snapped

August 15, 2007

Your Bees lost for just the second time in 10 games, falling 5-3 to Dayton last night.

Brady Everett’s three-run shot in the first inning accounted for all of the runs for the Bees. Everett’s homer was one of just two extra-base hits among the Bees’ 13 hits in the game. Derrick Robinson and Joe Dickerson each collected three singles.

The team’s off tomorrow, when our ball park will be site for filming scenes for a movie on minor league baseball.

The team’s back in action Thursday and Friday in Beloit before returning for home games Saturday and Sunday against Quad Cities.

Randy’s back!

August 14, 2007

We’ve got some great news as we wrap up this eight-game home stand.

Our “Voice of the Bees,” Randy Wehofer will be back on the air tonight. He’s recovering from a successful surgery this last Friday.

For the first time in almost two weeks, you can listen to Randy on the Bees Radio Network — 1490 AM KBUR and 1360 AM KBKB The Ticket — or at www.gobees.com. This is great timing for Randy to be back in the swing of things, as he has a speaking part in the movie filming here tomorrow.

As we welcome Randy back, we are losing three valued members of our summer-intern team. This is the last day for Tom Felgar, Ian Price, and Paul Swafford. Tonight is Intern Appreciation Night, an opportunity for us to thank all of our interns for their hard work and contributions. It’s been a great group to work with, and we are excited that our three other summer interns — Ashley Jay, Ross Claussen, and Ryan Claussen — will be with us through the end of the season.

Your Bees will try to pick up their ninth win in ten games, hosting Dayton tonight at 7. It’s our last home game until Saturday’s 6 o’clock contest against the Swing of the Quad Cities on Survivors’ Night, in partnership with the American Cancer Society.

Bees continue winning ways on Royals Night

August 14, 2007

Donning the uniforms of their parent club, your Bees won their fourth-straight game on our first-ever Kansas City Royals Night.

They dug themselves out of an early 3-0 hole to defeat Dayton 7-3 last night for their eighth win in nine games.

Derrick Robinson, Jeff Bianchi, Luis Castillo, and Matt Morizio each got two hits in the Bees’ 13-hit attack. Bianchi homered and Robinson drove in a pair.

Everett Teaford went six innings, improving his record to 5-8. Angelo Morales continued to dominate, throwing three hitless innings, collecting his second save, and dropping his ERA to an eye-popping 0.79.

It was a great night in the stands, too. With almost 1,700 fans on hand, we gave out lots of great prizes from the Royals. We also presented three promotions inspired by the ones at Royals games at Kauffman Stadium: “You Pick the Song,” “The Baseball-Cap Shuffle,” and “The Condiment Race.” It was a fun night all around.

Bees nip Dragons for third-straight W

August 13, 2007

Fans get cooled down in the ever-popular “Wet Zone,” momentarily escaping yesterday afternoon’s scorching heat.

Despite being held to just three hits, your Bees treated the hometown crowd to their third straight win, 3-2 over Dayton.

The opportunistic Bees brought in a couple runs to erase a 2-1 deficit in the fifth inning. With one out, Jesus Soto singled and advanced to third on Derrick Robinson’s single to left. After Jeff Bianchi walked to load the bases, Soto scored on Joe Dickerson’s comebacker, and Robinson came around from second to score on an error when Dragons pitcher Anthony Gressick threw the ball away.

Blake Wood (1-1) went five innings to pick up his first win in five starts with the Bees. With two on in the ninth, Chris Hayes struck out the only batter he faced, recording the game’s final out and getting save No. 11.

Your Bees (25-23) have won seven of eight.

Dayton (24-25) has lost five of six.

The teams continue this series tonight at 7. It’s Kansas City Royals Night on Dollar Monday. You can come catch your Bees in the uniforms of their major league affiliate, and give yourself the chance to win some sweet prizes from the Royals — tickets, bobbleheads, t-shirts, caps, and other fun promotional items.

Baseball Day at the Drake Courtyard

August 11, 2007

After Sunday’s game, all Bees fans are encouraged to enjoy a nice relaxing evening on the riverfront. Our second and final “Baseball Day at the Drake Courtyard” is your chance to do just that, and to meet the past two players of the month, voted by fans and sponsored by The Drake.

Congratulations to June player of the month Brady Everett and to Jamar Walton, last month’s winner. Also, congratulations to Haley Darnold and Ethan Moeller, who each have won a free meal from The Drake. Their names were drawn from the fan balloting.

We’ll get things started around 6 p.m. Sunday at The Drake. There will be ballpark-themed specials, and you can order anything off the menu.

Bees win seesaw battle

August 11, 2007

Your Bees kept rolling Saturday night, topping Dayton 6-4 and topping the .500 mark (24-23) at The Hive. Each team led twice in the series opener, which featured three ties.

The Bees took the lead for good in the sixth inning, when Luis Castillo’s second double of the night plated Kurt Mertins for a 5-4 lead. Castillo was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Josh Cribb (3-8) got the win in middle relief, and Angelo Morales picked up his first save and lowered his ERA to 0.92 with two scoreless innings to finish the game.

Winners of six of their last seven, the Bees will try to keep it going Sunday afternoon when we host Pot O’ Blue and Gold — your chance to support Notre Dame catholic schools and win the $100,000 grand prize. Game time is 2 o’clock.

Bees victorious on Cub Scout Night

August 11, 2007

Your Bees got all the runs they needed in a four-run second inning, topping Fort Wayne 5-3 last night.

Mario Santiago (5-7) collected his fourth straight win, and Everett Teaford and Chris Hayes each fanned two batters in two innings of work. Hayes notched his 10th save.

These photos are from yesterday’s Cub Scout Recognition and Campout Night — our biggest and best yet, with nearly 100 scouts on hand. A special thanks to Don Lofgren with the Mississippi Valley Council and John Jennison with Cub Scout Pack 85. They put a lot in to making this a successful annual event.

A whole lot going on tonight

August 10, 2007

In addition to being a Fireworks Friday to kick off Fort Madison Area Community Weekend, tonight’s game features a few more special promotions.

It’s our annual Cub Scout Recognition and Campout Night. The area packs will be part of a pre-game parade on the field, culminating in the presenting of the colors for the National Anthem. During the game, we will recognize all of the scout groups in attendance. After the post-game fireworks, the scouts will set up for camping out in the outfield, where they will watch a movie.

Tonight, we are teaming up with TriOak Foods to bring you The Best Pork-Loin Sandwich in the Midwest. As you enter the main gate, you’ll be greeted by the sweet smell of smoked pork. You can get your hands on one of these sandwiches at the tent set up just inside the gate.

And speaking of food, tonight, we’ll be handing out more loaves of the always-popular Sara Lee bread!

Gate opens at 6, game starts at 7.

Bees, Wizards split; series finale tonight

August 10, 2007

Your Bees’ winning streak snapped last night, but not before they won their fourth straight game.

Jesus Soto singled in Jamar Walton in the seventh and final inning of game one of last night’s doubleheader at The Hive, giving the home team a 1-0 win. Jason Godin pitched six shutout innings, and Henry Barrera pitched a perfect seventh frame to notch the win.

The second game went into extra innings, but the Wizards promptly put four runs on the board in the eighth inning to take a 7-3 win.

The Bees turned eight double plays in the doubleheader — four in each game.

The Bees (22-23) will try to get back to .500 tonight in the 7 p.m. series finale.
