After just one start for high-A Wilmington — and a commanding one at that — Matt Campbell is back on the Burlington roster, and he’ll take the mound for the Bees tonight at Peoria.
The former first-round draft pick was promoted last Thursday and made his only start for the Blue Rocks the next day. In a 4-2 win at Winston-Salem, he allowed two runs on just three hits. In front of a fan club of family and friends who made the trip from his native South Carolina, Campbell struck out five in seven innings to pick up the victory.
That same day, back in Beloit, Bees pitcher Mario Santiago took a batted ball off his pitching hand, forcing him to miss his next outing. And that’s where Campbell comes in. Santiago was scheduled to start tonight, and Campbell will fill the spot left open by the injury of his former piggyback partner.
So, after less than a week at high-A, Campbell goes for the Bees tonight, trying to win his fifth-straight start. The game starts at 6:30.
