Matt Kniginyzky, a Midwest League all-star in 2006, joined the Bees yesterday. The team’s Opening Day starter last season, he will take the mound for the Bees against Beloit on Independence Day. In 2006, he was 9-5 with a 3.51 ERA before losing the last month of the season due to a sore shoulder.
After offseason surgery, the right-handed Kniginyzky (that’s NUH-gin-ski) spent time in extended spring training before making two rehab starts — one in the Arizona Rookie League and one for the Idaho Falls Chukars in the Pioneer League.
Kniginyzky, a native of Toronto, Ontario, comes to us at a good time, as the Royals have placed lefty Matt Campbell on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. Campbell goes on the DL with a 4-2 mark and a 3.71 ERA in 12 games.
Tonight, the 7-4 Bees play the last game of their eight-game road swing. After snapping a two-game losing streak last night at Peoria, they’re trying for a series split with the Chiefs. Tonight’s game is at 6:30, and you can tune in to the game on the Bees Radio Network: 1360 The Ticket and 1490 KBUR. A win would give the Bees a 5-3 mark during this road action. It would also keep them in first place in the Midwest League’s Western Division.
